Behind the Game

What is Pre-Production?

Definition: Pre-Production is the planning phase of the project, where developers focus on expanding the idea and concept for a game as well as writing a lot of design documentation.

What does this actually mean?

Before a game even gets made developers are asking a load of questions such as:

  • Is there a market for our game and are there similar games to ours?
  • Who's the target audience?
  • What platform is the game targeting?
  • What kind of art style is the game going to have?
  • What kind of risks are involved in the development of this game?

After collecting all the necessary information, the developers create a GAME DESIGN DOCUMENT (GDD).

Game Design Document

A Game Design Document contains all of the information about a game’s design from the plot, genre, and gameplay to marketing strategies and monetization strategies

Examples:

After Pre-Production, the next phase of development is Production, where the main development of the game happens.
